For our Mount Zero Hero feature this month, we decided to turn our attention inward and feature our very own production manager, Simone Feltre!
Born in Soave, a charming town in northern Italy near the stunning Lake Garda that is renowned for its rich food and wine traditions, it’s no surprise that Simone has a deep-rooted passion for Italian cuisine and culture.
Simone’s emigration to Australia was unexpected at first, having set off on what he thought would be a short 3–4 month holiday in 2018. During his trip, Simone met his partner, Adrian, and when he returned to Italy, he made the bold decision to pack his bags more permanently this time and start a new chapter here for good. And we couldn’t be happier to have him!
Simone is a modest individual, but beneath his quiet nature lies a dry sense of humour and a dedication to quality produce that drives our production team forward. From streamlining our production processes to ensuring we stick to tight schedules, Simone’s precision and attention to detail are second to none and his efforts are instrumental in helping us to deliver the quality and consistency we strive for.
Beyond his work at Mount Zero, Simone is a man of many talents. He’s a keen rower, regularly waking up at an ungodly hour to train at his local rowing club in Albert Park before the rest of us are even out of bed. Simone also channels his love of Italian food into an importing business he helps run with his partner, Next Gen Foods, importing premium Italian delicacies such as Prosciutto di Parma, artisanal pasta and panettone into Australia.
Simone's love of Italian food runs deep, in a surprise to no one. When we asked him what dish from his hometown held a special place in his heart, he immediately mentioned 'Risotto all’Amarone'. This decadent risotto, made with Amarone della Valpolicella, a rich red wine from partially dried grapes, embodies the flavours and traditions of his Veronese heritage.
We’re extremely grateful to have Simone as part of our team here at Mount Zero. His work ethic, passion, and dedication make him an irreplaceable member of the Mount Zero family.
The Fast Five
1. What's your favourite Mount Zero product?
The Frantoio EVOO, but not just because it's an Italian variety. It's bold and punchy, just like the olive oils I'm used to back home.
2. Last place you dined out?
Da Guido, Carlton
3. What's your favourite Melbourne restaurant?
iTALiAN ARTiSANS, Albert Park
4. Favourite season/s of the year for produce?
Summer, as I love the bounty of seafood available.
5. Do you have any special projects scheduled for this year or beyond?
We're planning another research trip to Italy for the importing business in May to attend a food show in Milano.
