This versatile grain originates from Western Asia, though like our pulses, we source ours from the nutrient-dense, self-mulching soils of the Wimmera region in western Victoria.
The ‘pearl’ part of pearl barley is a reference to the ‘pearling’ process, where the outer husk and bran (which are difficult to digest and cook) are polished away. Some pearl barley on the market can be polished so thin that they lose their shape and become mushy when cooked, whereas we deliberately leave the inner husk intact on our pearled grains to provide better texture and nutrition when cooked.
Speaking of nutrition, Pearl barley is VERY good for you, with a mild, nutty flavour and a slightly chewy texture similar to brown rice. It’s of particular benefit to people with Type 2 Diabetes, as it contains beta-glucan soluble fibre, which is great for helping to manage blood sugar levels.
With a wide range of culinary uses, pearl barley makes a fantastic alternative to brown rice, couscous or lentils. It also makes a lovely addition to salads (such as in Nicky Reimer’s Chopped Tomato, Barley, Almond & Sumac Salad on our recipe archive!, and of course, it’s terrific in a hearty stew on a cold day!
